Why Do We Reject?

Any food item could be rejected at the border if it does not comply with the provisions of the Food Act No. 26 of 1980 or relevent regulations published under this Act.

Importers are advised to check the Sri Lankan regulations pertaining to imported and domestic food items before placing the order, even though the item is traded world-wide as food regulations of any country are unique.       Current Sri Lankan Food Regulations

Food item can be rejected by the inspecting officers if it,

  • Does not comply with the food regulations
  • Found to be unfit for human consumption or
  • Found to be Injurious to health

However consignees can appeal against such ejections. 

Appeal Procedure for border Rejections

Following procedure will be applicable if the consignee wishes to make an appeal against the rejection.

  • Make an appeal to the Chief food authority (Director General of Health Servises) through the Sri Lanka Customs.
  • Customs will send the appeal with observations to the Deputy Director General (EOH &FS) 
  • D.D.G(EOH&FS) will refer the appeal to the next available subcommittee setup under the Food act.
  • Subcommittee will review the appeal and make recommendations to the Chief Food Authority/Food advisory committee.
  • Chief Food Authority/Food Advisory committee will give the final decision.
