This procedure is regulated by Food (Iodization of Salt) Regulations 2005 under the Food Act.

The relevant section of the regulation states that “No person shall manufacture, import, store for sale, sell, offer for sale, expose or keep for sale, transport or distribute any type of edible common salt other than iodinated common salt for purposes of human consumption, including salt used as an ingredient of food and for food manufacture”.

Provision the of Food (Iodization of Salt) regulation 2005 Shall not apply to the use of common salt for industrial purposes under the authority of a permit issued by the Chief Food Authority (Director General of Health services) after registration of such industry with the Chief Food Authority,

  • Get a printout of the Application
  • Fill the application and place your signature
  • Handover the Application to the food control Administration Unit (FCAU) of the Ministry of Health at,
    No. 226, 1st floor, Medi-house building, Sri Sangaraja Mawatha, Collombo10, along with the required documents.

Procedure for Registration

  1. Handing over of the application with relevant documents to FCAU
  2. Pay the registration fee
  3. Inspection of the site by the Food control Administration Unit
  4. Take samples from the stock by FCAU
  5. Laboratory testing of the sample
  6. Issue the certificate valid for one year if inspection is satisfactory
  7. If unsatisfactory take corrective measures and follow step 3 to 5

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of business registration
  • Certified copy of national identity card of the owner of the business
  • Certified copy of approved building plan
  • Certified copy of registration of the business by the local authority.
  • Label of the final product - This label shall be in accordance with the Food (Labeling and Advertising) Regulations 2005.
  • Expired Certificate (if issued earlier)
