IMPORTANT! : Before starting the constructions of the factory please ensure that the well is completed in accordance with the water board regulations and the source water is in accordance with the SLSI standards. Registration will not be granted if the source water (before treatment) is not in accordance with the SLSI potable water standard.

Registration of bottled water manufacturing facility is done by the FCAU of the Ministry of Health in accordance with the Food (Bottled water Registration) Regulations 2011 under the Food Act No. 26 of 1980.

Please ensure that the following requirements are met before applying                                                                          

  • The premises of the bottled water manufacturing facility and the water source should be owned by the applicant.
  • If not owed by the applicant, documentary evidence need to be provided to prove that the applicant has the legal right to use the land at least for 5 years.
  • Extent of the land shall be not less than 160 perches.
  • The water source should have been constructed in accordance with the gazette notification number 2010/23 of Water Resource Board Act No. 29 of 1964.
  • Source water shall comply with SLS 614:2013 standard of Sri Lanka Standard Institution.

Registration will be granted only for the following sources of water

  • Spring
  • Tube well
  • Dug well

Registration procedure

  1. Download the application.
    Application
  2. Get a printout of the application.
  3. Handover the application to the Food Control Administration Unit (FCAU) of the Ministry of Health at No. 226, 1st floor, Medi-house building, Sri Sangaraja Mawatha, Colombo10, along with the required documents in duplicate. The applicat should fulfil the requirements in the following table as well.
  4. Pay the registration fee (Rs.50,000/=)
  5. FCAU will send one set of documents to Sri Lanka Standard Institution.(SLSI)
  6. SlSI will do an audit of the premises and water source.
  7. SLSI will issue a recommendation letter to FCAU valid for one year for provisional registration of the facility.
  8. FCAU will inform the area PHI, MOH and FDI to inspect the factory and give recommendations to FCAU.
  9. FCAU will receive the recommendation from the above officers.
  10. FCAU will send an inspection team from FCAU to the site for inspection and report.
  11. On satisfactory recommendation of all above (8 & 9) Chief food authority will issue a conditional temporarily registration for one year.
  12. Within first year of registration SLSI will do a second audit of the facility.
  13. On satisfactory report from the SLSI, Chief food authority will issue registration for further 2 years.
  14. Renewal of the registration to be done every 3 years.
  15. Renewal will be based on the steps 8 and 9 above and analytical results of source and finished water.
